Generation I (R/B/Y) and II (G/S/C) hacking is 'old skool' at this point in time, and a little more complex than generation III due to the lack of tools. So you've decided you want to make a hack? You need to decide which generation and specifically which game version you want to use. If you don't feel like you have a lot of time to invest in making your own hack, consider joining a team and contributing to a group project. Expect longer if you are doing it solo or you lack the necessary knowledge and are learning as you go along.īig stumbling blocks and time consuming features are using custom tiles, inserting new Pokémon, adding new regions, and creating games with multiple paths. You can expect your hack to take you anywhere from a Summer (for minor trainer teams, sprite changes, or dialogue changes) to three years. Even less games actually ever end up 'finished'. I'd say 10-20% of hacks release a BETA or ALPHA version and maybe 5% make it into a stage where a game is playable. The truth is very few hacks make it to completion. I recommend the XSE scripting tutorials in the sidebar as a starting point. The best way to learn all those bits is to grab a copy of a ROM and dive in to a mapping or scripting tutorial until you think you're ready to move on to the big game. ROM hacking isn't an easy process - unless you have a very specific goal, such as removing a Pokémon or adding a specific item, it's an eclectic process - there are lot of little bits you need to know. I don't claim to be an expert however there have been quite a few questions about starting a ROM hack so I thought I'd share what I know. Read the FAQs before posting your question in the containment sticky.Īwarded for consistent high quality submissionsĪwarded to ROM hackers who have demonstrated proof of concept or provided alpha releases of their hackĪwarded to ROM hackers who have provided beta releases or final versions of their hackĪwarded to ROM hackers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty just making and releasing a hackĪwarded to spriters and concept artists who have produced artwork for ROM hacksĪny other flairs you see have been awarded according to the whims of the mod team.Containment sticky: Questions/suggestion requests and content related to new hack releases are to be contained in a megathread stickied/pinned at the top of the subreddit.Do not ask for ROM hack suggestions without being specific. These are threads where the only content is you showing a team preview, showing a shiny you found/caught, or pixel art not related to any hacks at all, meaning fusions and resprites that are not likely to be put in a hack. No team screenshots, shiny screenshots, or pictures of non-ROM-hack-related sprite art.Criticism and feedback threads are all right, as long as it's a legitimate call for feedback. No posting "idea" threads, where you describe an idea and hope someone takes it and makes your hack for you, or if you have not made any progress starting your hack. Please contact the moderators if you have any questions. Otherwise, pokemon are identical to vanilla Emerald as far as I’m aware.Gym statues now display the game’s level caps.Milotic and Trade Evos now evolve by level up at level 36.Sky Pillar Rayquaza has been changed to Level 40.Evo items have been changed to work like evolution stones (e.g metal coat). All evolution items are purchasable in Lilycove Department Store 2F.In this romhack, you’re forced to play blind against whatever terrors my algorithm has generated for you.Īs of a3, your encounters are randomized too! ~Anguishjumps Changes This means every trainer battle in the game is new each time you play it- but never truly random. I believe I have created an algorithm that emulates that process and picks an appropriate team every time you start a pokemon battle. Usually, every trainer in the game has a team hand-picked by the developers according to level, difficulty, class, etc. ![]() Also, be sure to check out Pokemon Blue Stars 3 Forces Description
